Vocabulary

  • Prehistory: a period in time before history was written down
  • Paleolithic Era: time period in history when man hunted and gathered and migrated often
  • Neolithic Period: time in history when man learned to farm, settled in communities, and populations grew
  • Archeology: the study of lives of early people by examining their physical remains (things left behind)
  • Artifact: any man-made object that was left behind
  • Fossils: the remains of something that was once living
  • Technology: tools and machinery used to produce work (ex: axe, stones, spear —> pencil, computer, car)
  • Nomads: people who move from place to place in search of food
  • Old Stone Age: another name for the Paleolithic Period
  • Afterlife: the belief that when someone dies their spirit moves on to another place
  • Animism: the belief that all living things have spirits
  • Neolithic Revolution: the time in history, around 10,000B.C. when humans switched from hunting and gathering to farming. Man also learned to domesticate animals.
  • New Stone Age: another name for the Neolithic Period
  • Cultural Diffusion: the spread of ideas (including culture and technology) from one group to another
  • Civilizations: advanced societies
