Types of Maps
AIM: Why is it important to use different kinds of maps?
Do Now: Why do we use maps? Can GPS replace maps?
There are many different types of maps. The most popular are:
- Political Map - Map of political borders and boundaries. (countries and territories)
- Physical Map - Map of the geological features of the earth. (mountains, rivers, deserts, plateau,etc)
- Elevation Map - Map of the height of an area or region (has contour lines which indicate the elevation)
- Relief Map - Shows the topography of the earth. (Map is a 3D representation)
- Historical Map - Shows the history of a civilization, city, empire, etc.
- Distribution Map - Shows how different items are distributed across the world, a region, or an area.
