The Roman Empire was riddled with corruption (dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery). Once the empire was split in two (Western & Eastern), the Western half saw its decline from corruption, disease, barbarian invasions, high taxes, famine, population loss in the Roman Capital itself, and failed military leadership, and government.

The Fall of the Roman Empire directly leads to the Dark Ages in Europe, while the Eastern Roman Empire we call the Byzantine Empire lasts until 1453 when the Ottoman Turks invade Constantinople and end the Eastern Roman Empire.
