NYS Global History Regents Exam - Part I - Multiple Choice
Multiple Choice for the exam is not Multiple Guess. To answer Multiple Choice effectively requires learning a skill. There are some important strategies to utilize when answering Multiple Choice questions.
For set of questions pertaining to the passage, chart, graph, political cartoon, map, bulleted listing, photo, etc:
Read Question before reading passage, chart, graph, political cartoon, map, bulleted listing, photo, etc.
Read the passage, chart, political cartoon, graph, map, bulleted list, photo, etc. carefully looking at all words and ideas including the title (if any) and source.
Look for the correct answer. Go with your instinct.
Use your acquired vocabulary for assisting you in reading your question and the responses. The exam will contain many of the vocabulary words acquired throughout the course of the year. Most of these words will appear throughout your exam. Know your vocabulary!
Eliminate any answer that can be a distractor. Ex: not in same time period; answers that are the opposite of the correct answer; words used such as, increase instead of decrease, a cause instead of a result, etc.
Be careful of answers which are the feel good words such as; 'freedom, equality, democracy, and justice,' especially if it says "for all" or "everyone". 99% of the time they are the incorrect answers. The Regents know that students gravitate to these answers because it's a desire for everyone.
You can also eliminate incorrect responses by using PERSIA some of the time. If a question is all about government (political) it most likely will be a political answer. If it is about economics the answer is most likely economic. Eliminate answers that don't make sense in the context in which the question was asked.|-
Once you have eliminated at least two inaccurate responses, and you still don't have an answer, make an educated guess. At this point you will hopefully have a 50/50 chance of getting the correct answer. Go with your instinct.
The answer to the first multiple choice question in the set is always found within the document. The answer to the second and further multiple choice questions in the set are inferences based upon your answer to the first question.
