Lesson 18 - How to write an introduction
Essay Writing - Introduction
Aim: How do you put together a complete introduction by incorporating WRS?
Do Now: Answer the following questions:
- When is it appropriate to use the first person when writing an essay? ex. I am going to tell you...
- When is it appropriate to use texting language and abbreviations?
Use the DRL format for the introduction.
Step #1:
D = Define the historical context or theme. This is usually a definition of the theme.
Step #2:
R = Re-Write the historical context or theme. You need to change most of the words in the historical theme except the actual topic.
Step #3:
L = List the topics that will be in your body paragraphs.
Example:
Historical Context:
Throughout history, Geographic factors such as deserts, monsoons, and cold climates have had a variety of effects on different regions.
Step #1: - Define' Define your theme. This theme is based on Geography, so you could use the definition of Geography to start off.
Geography is the relationship between people and the earth.
Step #2 - Re-Write: This is when you re-write the historical context or theme.
In the past, Geographic factors have changed various areas and civilizations.
Step #3 - List: This is when you list the topics you are using in your body paragraphs.
Two of these geographic factors are monsoons and cold climates.
