Sneferu: The Pyramid Builder

Pharaoh Sneferu, who ruled during Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty around 2613–2589 BCE, is often considered one of the most innovative and successful pharaohs of ancient Egypt. He is credited with transforming Egyptian architecture and pioneering the development of the pyramid form. Sneferu commissioned the construction of at least three major pyramids during his reign, including the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid. The Bent Pyramid, located at Dahshur, is particularly significant because its change in angle during construction led to its distinctive bent shape, but it also provided valuable insights that helped in the design of later pyramids. His third pyramid, the Red Pyramid, is regarded as the first successful true pyramid, characterized by its smooth sides and perfect geometric form. These architectural innovations marked a major step forward in pyramid construction, influencing the grand pyramids built in subsequent dynasties.
Beyond his architectural achievements, Sneferu was a skilled military leader and an effective ruler. His reign is marked by relative stability, which allowed for the successful organization and mobilization of labor for his monumental building projects. Sneferu’s military campaigns included expeditions into Nubia and the Sinai Peninsula, securing Egypt’s borders and ensuring a steady flow of resources necessary for his construction efforts. Sneferu also oversaw the expansion of Egypt’s trading networks, fostering economic prosperity. His contributions to both architecture and governance helped solidify the power of the pharaohs and set the stage for the continued prosperity of the Old Kingdom (Schoch).
