AIM: How to maximize points on a Thematic or DBQ Essay

Do Now: What is the maximum score you can receive on an essay if you copy the theme word-for-word?

Use the DRL format for the introduction.

Step #1:

D = Define the historical context or theme. This is usually a definition of the theme.

Step #2:

R = Re-Write the historical context or theme. You need to change most of the words in the historical theme except the actual topic. See WRS below for some additional help.

Step #3:

L = List the topics that will be in your body paragraphs.


Example:

Historical Context:

Throughout history, Geographic factors such as deserts, monsoons, and cold climates have had a variety of effects on different regions.


Step #1: - Define' Define your theme. This theme is based on Geography, so you could use the definition of Geography to start off.

Geography is the relationship between people and the earth.


Step #2 - Re-Write: This is when you re-write the historical context or theme.

In the past, Geographic factors have changed various areas and civilizations.


Step #3 - List: This is when you list the topics you are using in your body paragraphs.

Two of these geographic factors are monsoons and cold climates.

Word Replacement Strategy

If you have difficulty re-writing your historical context or theme, use the strategy below known as WRS (Word Replacement Strategy)?

  1. Read the theme or historical context
  2. Circle the important words.
  3. Think of replacements for the most of the important words and phrases.(Multiple replacements may be necessary)
  4. Paraphrase (put into your own words) the theme or historical context using the replacement words.

Example:

Theme: Culture and Intellectual Life

Intellectuals, philosophers, and leaders have often recorded their ideas in written works. These ideas have been used throughout history to guide societies and influence the course of national and regional development.


Completed Sentence:

All over the world, thinkers, dreamers, and the people in power use words such as books to move and shape their culture within their state in order to affect the advancement of their society.

Body Paragraphs

  • Pick your two (2) Geographic Factors based upon the documents you are going to write about. Write them in on your second page of your worksheet packet.
  • Brainstorm, and make a chart with bullets.
